Welcome to my blog!! Here’s a little bit about me.
I’m a 37 year old teacher/wannabe chef-homesteader/mother born and raised in New York. I love it there… but an unforgettable trip to South Africa after Hurricane Sandy made me realise how much of the world I have yet to see. Plus, I still wanted to get my doctorate (a promise I had made to myself and my dad after completing grad school); so I thought why not combine the two? And being the impulsive person I am, I did. I left my job, booked one way tickets to places I had never been and took one big leap of faith into my next adventure.
We all serve a purpose in this life. I didn’t find mine until I received my Master’s degree in teaching. Growing up I knew I wanted to make a difference, but just like so many of us, I didn’t know how. When I started my education career at Long Island Lutheran I realised almost immediately I had found it. The school gave me the room to grow as a person, teacher, coach, mentor and most importantly advocate for the students I encountered each and every day.
The classes I taught were not ordinary classes either. In marketing the business students created lemonade stands for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation; in entrepreneurship they held presentations in front of a “shark tank” full of successful entrepreneurs; and in fashion the students made their own pieces for the yearly fashion shows. I guess you could say I am not an ordinary teacher. I would love to say I am a Miss Frizzle and a Miss Honey combined. I hope that is how my students see me anyway.
Since then I have taught so many wonderful people and things: paddle-boarding, yoga, sport, early childhood, most school years and I am about to start the new year as a permanent teacher at Warkworth Primary School.
Teaching isn’t work if you do it right. It’s a gift we are given. And not a job for the faint of heart. I soon realised that all students (young and old) just need a helping hand sometimes. We are all looking for experiences to guide us in the right direction; and any experience whether positive or negative, good or bad, joyous or painful teaches us more about ourselves and the windy road that we are on. And in the end it will inevitably only make us stronger, wiser and much much braver.
So, that’s me. On an epic journey halfway around the world. In hopes of not only learning more about myself, but urging others to do the same. And if i’m lucky, maybe i’ll stumble upon a little bit of love and a whole lot of adventure along the way.
